Welcome to the land of high passes! Upon arrival at Leh airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. The first day is crucial for acclimatization to the high altitude (11,500 ft). Rest, drink plenty of water, and take a gentle walk in the evening to help your body adjust. Overnight in Leh.
After a relaxed breakfast, we will begin our spiritual journey by visiting the Shanti Stupa, offering panoramic views of Leh town and the surrounding mountains. Later, we explore the historic Leh Palace. The evening is free for you to wander through the charming Leh market. Overnight in Leh.
Today we explore the monasteries east of Leh. We start with Thiksey Monastery, an impressive complex resembling the Potala Palace in Lhasa. We then visit the ancient Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest in Ladakh, hidden in a gorge. On our way back, we will stop at Shey Palace and Monastery, the former summer capital of Ladakh. Overnight in Leh.
We drive west along the Indus River to visit some of the oldest monastic sites. Our first stop is Alchi Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its unique 11th-century Kashmiri-style murals. We then continue to Lamayuru Monastery, known for its dramatic "moonland" landscape and ancient meditation caves. Overnight in Lamayuru or Alchi.
After breakfast, we start our journey back to Leh. En route, we visit Likir Monastery, home to a magnificent 75-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha. We will also stop at the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers and experience the mysterious phenomenon of Magnetic Hill. Overnight in Leh.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Leh airport for your flight home, carrying with you the peace and spiritual energy of Ladakh. Your monastery tour concludes here.
